Tx Systems' Perspective on the FIDO Alliance State of Passkeys 2026 Report

To us, the latest FIDO Alliance State of Passkeys 2026 Report makes one thing clear: we are no longer talking about the future of authentication—we’re living in it.

Passkeys have officially moved beyond early adoption and into mainstream behavior across both consumers and the workforce. And for organizations still treating them as “emerging tech,” the gap between expectation and experience is growing fast.

5 Billion Passkeys. That’s Not a Trend... That’s Infrastructure.

The headline statistic from the report says everything:

More than 5 billion passkeys are now actively in use worldwide.

That scale matters because it signals something bigger than adoption, it signals normalization. Consumers are no longer “testing” passkeys. Enterprises are no longer “evaluating” them. The authentication ecosystem has crossed an inflection point where passkeys are becoming the default expectation for secure digital access.

The Death of the Password is Here

For years, the industry predicted the decline of passwords. But predictions don’t drive change, behavior does.

The 2026 data shows a decisive shift:

  • Users are choosing speed and simplicity over memorization
  • Security is no longer a trade-off, it’s expected by default
  • Friction is now the biggest threat to adoption

Passkeys win on all three.

They eliminate phishing risk, remove password fatigue, and streamline login into a near-invisible experience. That’s not incremental improvement—that’s a fundamental redesign of identity.

There’s Still a Gap Between Deployment and True Passwordless

The report also highlights a critical reality check:

Despite passkey growth, 57% of organizations still rely on phishable authentication methods for primary workforce sign-ins. That distinction matters. Deploying passkeys is not the same as eliminating passwords.

Many organizations are still operating in hybrid environments where:

  • Legacy systems remain dependent on passwords
  • MFA introduces additional friction
  • Recovery workflows are immature
  • Cross-platform support is inconsistent

In other words: the transition is real, but incomplete. That’s exactly where modern authentication providers, identity platforms, smart credential solutions, and interoperable security ecosystems become essential.
